My boss and his wife are Greek…like full-on, 100%. I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before in talking about how amazing is that Greek salad his mother-in-law makes. If you don’t recall I crave that salad in a serious way. Like I dream about it, want it every day love it.
I don’t eat a lot of sweets these days, which surprises most people who know I’m a baker. Truth is, sugar used to be my major addiction. Baked goods. Cake. Cookies. Pastries of any kind. Candy. Anything with sugar, really. But not so much anymore. Ever since starting the cupcake business I can barely stand to eat sweet stuff. I still like toasted coconut with chocolate – like in a haystack – from time to time or a chocolate covered marshmallow. But even those two favorites I bought in the after-xmas sale at Walgreens for like 25 cents each have been sitting in my desk drawer for a week. Before they would have been devoured. The goldfish, however, gone in a day. Apparently I now love salty stuff that is made with processed cheese and crap, so maybe I need to start a homemade goldfish biz?
Back to the Greek, though. Today my boss came back from lunch with a big tray of Greek pastries his mother-in-law made and he planted it directly in my hands. Other than the baklava I have no faint clue what the other things are, but when I got home from work I had to try them. Omg. Relish! In true Greek sweet fashion they were all nutty and honey-filled. Each one more flaky and amazing than the next. Buddy, Moxie and I thoroughly enjoyed them! I had to share them with the pups since I could no way eat more than one bite of each.
The nice thing was even with all the honey none of them were ridiculously sweet, as I now find cake and frosting to be. Even my own not super sweet frosting kinda makes me gag, so this was a welcome surprise. But now I have oodles of Greek pastries, along with 12 cupcakes I saved from my order this morning so I could give them to Dave after he said he wanted to review PCD on yelp. Thing is if I’m not going to see him like tomorrow then the cupcakes are a wash. No way I’m giving an elite yelper 2-day old cupcakes to review. That would just be stupid.
Speaking of Dave…I’m pleased with the slow progression of things. We’ve been texting a lot and we’ve both been kinda sly about letting the other know we’re interested. This is a good thing. I still have reserved excitement…as in I’d like to spend more time with him, but I’m totally letting him take the lead on pursuing. Thankfully he’s biting for the most part.
Tonight is NYE and while most of you rockstars will be out partying this girl will be chillin at home with pups, enjoying some reflection time and watching movies or episodes of the Millionaire Matchmaker that I’ve saved up. Don’t feel bad, though. I’ve grown tired of the looks of pity I’ve gotten when I say I’m staying home tonight. The reality is I don’t feel the need to party it up and/or get all crazy. I’m a homebody, which means I just look at tonight as another Friday night. Post-divorce I was all “oh I have to go live it up and do this and that” now I’m more “hey, I’m cool. It’s just another day.” Your judgments aren’t necessary :)
My wish for anyone reading these words is that your upcoming year is filled with peace, love and a comfort that generally only comes from within. Isn’t that what we all want, really? So that’s the wish. And goal.
And HNY.
I like most Greek food but the deserts I can do without. I tried baklava once and was done. Blech. I guess my palate just didn’t appreciate it.
Looks like we’ll be ringing in the new year at home too since neither one of us has mentioned going out today. It’s been raining on and off here all day and some tornadoes touched down this morning in the NW part of the state. We live in NC AR and were under a tornado watch at some point (not sure if that’s still the case). All things considered, I think I’d rather be at home tonight.
Happy New Year to you, Buddy and Moxie!!
Happy NYE to you too sugar. I’m not going out. I never do(did) so this year is no different. I’m spending it with my bestie and my baby and we’ll see if we’re still up by midnight lol.
I hope your new year is filled with all the things you deserve( specially that boyfriend! Lol)
Greek salad sounds so yummy, got me craving it now. I can do without baklava and any of the other Mediterranean deserts I’ve tried but I am not a “sweet” girl anyway, I am all about the salt.
I’m at home with my Chihuahua and it will take an act of God for us both not to be asleep at the stroke of midnight.
Happy New Year hun!
**drool** My mouth would be watering even more if I hadn’t spent all afternoon munching on homemade candy.
